How An Interior Designer Can Transform The Lighting In Your Home

A lot of new homeowners don’t realize the importance of using an interior designer for their electrical layout.

When a new home is built, the architect will typically do a general layout so the contractor can estimate an electrical bid. The electrical overlay is usually built into the architect’s contract. However, you won’t really get to a real true electrical plan until you have a furniture layout, and part of getting furniture layout is hiring an interior designer.

I have been on jobs where huge rooms had no floor outlets. This completely eliminated the option of using any kind of floor lamps. In a room that size (or any size, really), having strictly overhead lighting can feel stale and harsh.

You need a certain kind of balance in your electrical plan that only an interior designer can provide.

For instance, in your bathroom do you need one receptacle or four? In my bathroom, I have a hair dryer, an electrical toothbrush, electric curlers, and a plug-in for my phone. If you don’t plan for these things, you may be stuck with a tangle of cords, or doing your hair in the corner of your bedroom crouched by the plug behind your dresser.

Suddenly, all those little outlets mean something.

If you have an architect, a lot of the time they won’t think about these things. But it’s the little nuances that make a successful project.

In my home, I have overhead lighting, lamps, uplighting, lighting on timers, and even lighting on the floor that goes behind sculptures. It feels warm when you walk in. Have you ever notices how some people’s homes feel warm when you walk in, and other places you go feel harsh and you don’t know why? This is why.

Implementing ambient lighting is what makes a room feel inviting. Using a variety of lighting sources is key to creating a cozy and comforting environment. You deserve that, and you deserve to have outlets in all the right places ;)
